Mom’s Guide to the First Day of Guppy Class

So your little swimmer is starting Guppy Class at Houston Swim Club! That is a BIG step for our little swimmers ages 2 1/2 to under 5. Some kids might be excited, scared, or have no idea what to expect. Moms (and dads) can be nervous, too, especially if it’s the first time they’ve been in a lesson without you in arms reach.

But don’t worry. Our Guppy class is designed to help young children build water comfort, learn important water safety skills, and begin gaining confidence with the help of caring swim instructors.

The first lesson is all about getting used to the pool, the teacher, the routine, and the idea that swim lessons are a safe, positive place to learn. That’s why it’s a full one week session every day, because we know that kids thrive on that consistency and repetition.

Read the Guppy book before class

One of the best ways to help your child get ready for their first day is to read the Guppy book together. You get a free one when you sign up. The Guppy book helps introduce what swim lessons will be like in a kid friendly way, so your little swimmer can start recognizing the routine before they arrive.

You can talk about the pictures, point out the teacher, the pool, and the other swimmers, and remind your kiddo that their instructor is there to help them learn and be safe.

There is also a video and audio version on YouTube, which can be helpful for little ones who like to watch and listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUU4xm0uock

Soooo, read it together, watch it together, and help your Guppy feel a little more familiar before that first splash.

Send them to class with confidence

For many Guppies, swim class may be one of their first independent activities without mom or dad right beside them. That can bring some first day nerves, and sometimes a few tears too.

That’s ok! We’re used to the crying. There’s always at least one upset kiddo, but after hundreds of crying first-day students, we KNOW that they’ll be laughing and smiling by the end of intensive session (and that’s also why we do it).

Your child will look to you to understand how they should feel. If you stay calm, smile, and show confidence in the instructor, it helps your Guppy feel more secure. A simple goodbye like, “I love you, have fun, and I’ll be right here when you’re done,” can go a long way.

Buuuut try not to linger too long. A calm, confident handoff helps the instructor begin building trust with your swimmer. And you can always smile and wave to reassure them through the glass while you watch the class.

Sometimes the second day is worse

Monday may feel a little bumpy, or not, but surprisingly Tuesday is sometimes when the tears start to come out. The first day they weren’t quite sure of what to expect, and now at day 2, they may be hesitant. Keep your confidence up and your encouraging words flowing. They may be crying at the door but after a few minutes in the water, their swim teacher is going to bring out the smiles.

Celebrate brave little wins

In these first days, every little step matters. Did your swimmer walk to class? Win. Did they stay still on the step? Win. Did they try bubbles, barbell kicks, floating, or getting their ears wet? BIG win!

After class, focus on what your child did well. Try saying, “I’m so proud of you for trying,” or “You were so brave today.”

That encouragement helps your Guppy come back ready to try again the next day, and the next.

You’ve got this!

Well, the first day of Guppy class can feel like a lot, but it is also the beginning of something wonderful. Your child is learning how to be more comfortable, more confident, and safer around water.

At Houston Swim Club, our instructors are here to help every Guppy feel supported as they learn. First days can be emotional, exciting, and sometimes scary, but we are ready for all of it.

So pack the swimsuit, bring a towel, read the Guppy book, take a deep breath, and get ready to cheer on your swimmer. They’re about to start an amazing journey and we can't wait to be here for you.
