How to Choose the Best Swim School for your Child
Hi, parents! It’s Howey the Dolphin, water safety expert! We know there are a lot of options out there for swim lessons in Houston. It’s a really important skill to learn, especially when we’re around so much water like pools, Galveston beach, and all our amazing lakes, not to mention the bayous (watch for alligators!).
Soooo, how DO you choose the best swim school for your kiddo? I asked a bunch of our parents how THEY made the choice, and we came up with these top 3.
Look for a strong focus on water safety
Especially for the little ones, it’s not just about learning how to swim, but also learning about water safety rules (Pssst: kids can learn more on my special kid-friendly game website at kidswatersafety.org) and how to be safer around the water. A good swim school should teach water safety skills at every level in AND out of the water.
For young swimmers, that means learning comfort, breath control, safe entries, listening to instructions (a great skill to learn in group classes!) and the super-important floating on your back. That’s the critical rescue skill that you always hear about, the back float. We’re famous for it and have been teaching it for decades. It’s THE MOST important part of early self-rescue swim skills.
For older kids and teens, it means building endurance, confidence, and especially making SMART CHOICES in and around the water.
Look for trained, caring swim instructors
A great swim instructor can make all the difference! Kids learn best when they feel supported, understood, and their accomplishments are CELEBRATED. Look for professional swim instructors who are patient, encouraging, and experienced with different ages and skill levels.
Whether your child is nervous about the water, ready to move from beginner swim lessons to stronger stroke development, or preparing for swim team, the right instructor should help them build confidence one step at a time. A bad experience can really set them back. We’re teaching safety, but it needs to be FUN!
I know every swimmer is different, so a good swim school should meet your child where they are and help them grow from there.
Look for a facility that makes lessons comfortable and convenient
I know you’re busy busy, so the right swim school should make lessons easier for everyone. Indoor, heated pools are a big plus because they allow for year-round swim lessons in warm water, no matter the weather outside and no matter whether your local or backyard pool is open for swimming.
It also helps when the swim school has family friendly features like changing rooms, free Wi Fi, swimsuit and hair dryers, drinks and snacks, nice chairs, and a swim gear shop. These little things can make a big difference when you are getting kids ready before and after class. Let’s be real, mom and dad want to relax and enjoy the experience, too!
Ready to find the right swim school?
Choosing the best swim school for your child is really about finding a place where your swimmer feels safe, supported, and excited to learn. Look for warm water, caring instructors, a proven swim curriculum, and a strong focus on water safety.
Well, that about covers it! We would love to have your family swim with us at Houston Swim Club! But most importantly, we hope this guide helps you choose the swim school that is right for your family.
Stay safe and keep swimming!
