How to get your baby started in swim lessons

Howey the Dolphin here! Starting baby swim lessons is such an exciting step for your little swimmer. Even as young as 4 months (which is the age we start at!), those early lessons are all about building trust, safety, and confidence.

At Houston Swim Club, our Parent/Child Swim Lessons help little ones learn comfort in the water, breath control, safe entry habits, and a love of swimming one small splash at a time. And guess what? Parents are a BIG part of the learning too!

If you’re getting ready to start swim lessons with your baby or maybe on the fence, here are my top 3 tips that may help.

Start with comfort, not perfection

Your baby does not need to do everything perfectly on day one. In fact, the first goal of baby swim lessons is simply helping your child feel comfortable in the water, not necessarily forcing skills right away (which can really backfire!).

There will be songs, games, new faces, new sounds, and lots of new sensations. That can be exciting, buuuut it can also take time. Some babies smile right away. Some babies need a few classes to adjust. Some may cry, and that’s ok!

The most important thing is to stay calm, encouraging, and consistent. Your little one looks to YOU for confidence, so if you feel relaxed, they are more likely to feel safe too.

Practice safe habits from the very beginning

Even with babies, water safety starts right away. One of the first things mom and dad can help teach is safe entry into the pool and listening to directions. Like, “don’t get in the water until mommy says so!”

For babies who are not walking yet, parents can safely enter the water while holding them. Once little ones are ready, they can begin learning to sit at the edge, wait for permission, roll to their belly, and slide in slowly while holding the wall.

Why does that matter? Because we want children to learn early that they should wait for an adult before getting into the water. This is one big area where don’t want them trying to explore on their own.

Use repetition, cues, and encouragement

Babies learn through repetition and fun games. That means doing the same skills, songs, holds, and routines again and again helps build comfort, trust, and understanding.

In parent child swim lessons, instructors help parents learn proper holds and consistent cues, especially for breath control. Using the same cue every time helps your baby begin to understand what is coming next. And songs? You bet. Our instructors are always singing (you should see us at karaoke night!).

Buuuut remember, every child learns at their own pace. Celebrate the little wins! A calm float, a happy splash, waiting at the wall, or trying a breath control activity are all steps forward.

They’ll be smarter

Okay, so I said I had 3 tips, but here’s another great one. Studies have shown that kids who learn how to swim at an early age and take swim lessons, especially in group classes, hit milestones earlier than their peers. We made a whole blog post about it, so go check that out, too! https://www.houstonswimclub.com/2019/02/Can-Swim-Lessons-Make-My-Child-Smarter

I’m excited to see you and your little one in the pool soon!
