The Importance of Learning to Float

Learning how to float on your back is an essential skill for swimmers of all ages and abilities. At Houston Swim Club Swim School, we understand the importance of this skill and make sure to teach it to all of our students.

The ability to float on their back allows children to safely float to the side or float and keep their head above the water until help can arrive, should they ever fall into a body of water. It's one of the most critical water safety skills that we teach.

In this blog post, we'll take a look at why learning how to float on your back is important while taking swim lessons at the Houston Swim Club.

Safety: Knowing how to float on your back is a key safety skill. In case of an emergency, being able to float on your back can help you to stay afloat and conserve energy until help arrives.

Relaxation: Floating on your back allows you to relax and release tension from your body. It can be a great way to unwind after a long day, or to help calm yourself down if you're feeling anxious.

Stroke development: Floating on your back is an important step in developing proper stroke technique. It allows you to focus on your body position, kick, and arm movements without having to worry about breathing.

Confidence building: Learning how to float on your back can be a confidence-building experience for many swimmers. It's a skill that often takes time and practice to master, but once you do, it can help to build a sense of accomplishment and self-assurance in the water.

At Houston Swim Club, our early water safety swim lessons focus on floating on their back, culminating in our infamous "Float Test". In this test we simulate children falling into the water wearing regular clothing. We test them 3 times successively to ensure that they've mastered the skills needed to save themselves in the water. It's a big deal, and we celebrate every time a child passes their float test (both with cheering, and with goodies for the swimmer - including getting their handprint forever on our walls)!

Visit any one of our locations and take a look at the handprints on the walls. Each one represents a child who learned to be SafeR in the water! Our friendly office staff would love to talk about water safety and the importance of floating, and give you a tour. Register today to get started on your water safety journey!

We love your kids.

We teach them lifesaving skills and so much more.
